Hollyoaks actress Anya Lawrence bought her first home, a 1930s house in Manchester, at just 20. It had been stripped back to the shell and rebuilt, so the kitchen, bathroom and garden were done. What it didn't have was any personality. With Lisa's help, Anya turned it into a home, much of it with her own two hands, and finished the lounge just in time to host Hollyoaks Does Come Dine With Me for the show's 30th anniversary.

In this episode

  • Why Anya put in an offer the morning after viewing, when her heart was set on a converted church apartment
  • Pulling up the carpet to find the original 1930s staircase, and sanding it back herself
  • Setting out panelling with a piece of string and a protractor
  • Where to spend and where to save: spend on what you can't undo, save on what you can swap
  • Naming a budget out loud, and the £2,500 sofa she bought for £800

Behind the Studio

Interior designer Lisa Hensby seated on a velvet sofa

“Everyone deserves to live in a home they love, no matter the budget.”

Lisa is self-taught, which means she learned this trade on site and on real projects rather than in a classroom. She shares what she knows: the budgets, the decisions, what really goes on behind the plasterboard. And because she stays with every project from first sketch to final styling, working with trusted trades who know how she works, the finished home stays true to the design.
